Overview

         

          The boat pilot is required to hold a U.S. Coast Guard license with all radar and radio license endorsements. The boat pilot will be responsible for operating a tow boat to position and move barges along the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers, as well as other miscellaneous work that needs to be performed.  The boat pilot will also be responsible for supervising the deckhands that are working with him during the operation of the tow boat.

          The boat pilot will be responsible for the completion of the necessary paperwork that is required as well as communicating any maintenance that needs completed to SMI Marine Transportation, L.P. management. This person will also be expected to follow all safety regulations set forth by SMI Marine Transportation, L.P. They will also be responsible for maintaining a clean work environment. This includes the tow boat and all other related equipment.

 

Reporting Relationships

         

The boat pilot will be responsible for keeping and turning in the required paperwork to SMI Marine Transportation, L.P. management. Examples of some of the documentation are listed below.

  • Towing Logs
  • Safety Sheets (TRACK)
  • Equipment Hours (weekly)
  • Maintenance needs

          All information listed above is to be turned in daily unless other wise noted above.

 

Working Conditions:

         

The boat pilot will be working in varying weather conditions, in dust and noisy areas. Substantial walking, bending, stooping, lifting or working in awkward or strained positions. Some hazard involved due to working in and around machinery. Boat pilot will be asked to work overtime as well as some weekends.
