Position Overview

Operates various types of rolling equipment to achieve a quality finished product in the paving process with special attention to meeting compaction requirements and aesthetics of the job.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

The criteria for evaluation in this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs daily maintenance of equipment as follows:
  • Inspect machine carefully for evidence of physical damage (cracking, bending or deformation of plates or welds).
  • Check for loose, broken or missing parts such as ROPS support brackets, vibration insulators, cocoa mats, scraper bars, and nuts and bolts.
  • Check level of all fluids ‑ brake, fuel, transmission, power steering, engine coolant, hydraulic system, etc.
  • Inspect various systems (water sprinkler, hydraulic, cooling, etc.)  for leaks.
  • Inspect all plugs, filler caps and fittings for signs of leaking.
  • Arrange for repair of leaks as necessary.
  • Inspect tires for cuts, bulges, irregularities and excessive or abnormal wear.  Check for proper inflation.
  • Complete daily equipment checklist, indicating status of equipment.
  • Operates roller in successive passes over pavement to seal mix and meet proper compaction requirements, while achieving quality, workmanship and smoothness of the mat. Establish rolling patterns in order to achieve compaction and smoothness.
  • Moves levers to control forward and backward motion of machine.
  • Moves levers and depresses pedals to maneuver speed.
  • Assists paving crew with other duties as necessary, including equipment transportation, hand work (looting, raking), operating hand compactor, flagging, and performing various tasks as necessary.
  • Ability to follow directions.


Other Requirement

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site in proper attire and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Policies, Programs & Procedures Manual.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.


Personal Protective Equipment

Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA and company policy.  Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position are: Reflective Vest, Safety Glasses, Hard Hat, Safety (hard toe) Shoes.


Qualification Requirements

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations, using some combination of skills and abilities.


Education & Experience:

  • Less than high school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Language Skills:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.



  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation is required for this position.  A CDL may be required if employee is expected to transport equipment to job sites.
