Position Summary

 

The Transportation Manager is responsible for scheduling and expediting on-time deliveries of finished products in the safest and most cost-efficient manner.  Models and demonstrates a “Culture of Safety” within the logistics team by ensuring all safety requirements (company, local, State and Federal) are met with each outbound load.  Ensures that the highest level of service is provided to the customer, with each interaction by listening to their needs, responding with solutions and making recommendations for improvement.  Proactively plans shipments and communicates daily and weekly schedule externally and internally to sales team and customer service manager.  Actively participates in training and development.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Prepares daily schedule for shipment volume and proactively communicates plan externally to carriers and internally with company truck drivers.  Adjusts schedule, as needed, to accommodate customer needs.
  • Resolve service failure issues utilizing root cause analysis.
  • Maintain and review master dispatch/delivery schedule.
  • Supervise and evaluate all dispatch operations, assigned personnel and company drivers.
  • Hire and discipline company drivers.
  • Oversee daily logistics planning for all locations.
  • Ensure drivers hours are within DOT regulations.
  • Ensure adequate staffing and scheduling of dispatchers and drivers.
  • Ensure carriers are responding to the daily customer service requirements.
  • Oversee processing of pick lists and ship tickets.
  • Negotiate competitive freight rates with hired haulers.
  • Ensure carriers are responding to the daily customer service requirements and are operating within established budget guidelines and contractual agreements.
  • Review and research new and existing transportation vendors; develop programs to reduce, replace and improve upon transportation costs and conduct analysis on when to utilize company trucks versus hired haulers, lease or buy equipment, etc.
  • Work with equipment providers to ensure all fleet equipment are operating safely, effective and economically.
  • Maintain vehicle maintenance and associated repair cost records.
  • Attend monthly manager meetings and production meetings to determine any possible impacts on loads to be shipped.
  • Where applicable – Serve as the company contact for insurance claims; filling follow-up etc. when the claims involve company drivers’ or company lease vehicles.
  • Where applicable – Manage the DOT compliance aspect of the Fleet (FMCSA)
  • Where applicable – Implement transportation related company policy and programs and keep current on government rules and regulations, reporting when necessary to upper management.
  • Where applicable – Managing the process of complete background checks and maintaining driver qualification files
  • Maintain DQF files working with our 3rd party vendor NECS on their DPMS website
  • Where applicable – Ensure drivers hours are within DOT regulations
  • Operate and maintain the Xata system, review Xata reports for safety and operational efficiencies such as cost reduction, etc.
  • Investigate billing/ticketing issues for accounting department.
  • Coordinate equipment repairs and safety issues with leasing company providers.
  • Other duties and responsibilities related to the nature of the job may be assigned on a temporary or permanent basis as needed.

 

Education / Experience

 

  • 3+ years with logistics/transportation/dispatch experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.

 

Knowledge / Skills / Ability

 

  • Understanding of safety and DOT transportation requirements.
  • Leadership skills; ability to lead meetings and teams.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills, analytical and problem solving ability.
  • Good time management skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Basic knowledge of accounting, purchasing, sales, marketing, or related field.
  • Strong organizational, communication and people skills.
  • Good organizational, motivational skills.
  • Demonstrated written / oral communication skills.
  • Ability to define, delegate and follow-up on assigned tasks.

  • Knowledge and ability to operate all MS Windows applications
  • Knowledge of Transportation Management Systems (TMS)

 

Work Environment

 

  • Industrial Plant environment.
  • Frequent Walking/Standing (6+ hrs/day).
  • Frequent lifting (up to 10 lbs).
  • Infrequent lifting (up to 25 lbs).
  • Max lift (up to 40 lbs).
