Position Overview

The Hot Plant Operator is responsible for ensuring the hot plant and the various operational structures of the hot plant are in top working order. Primarily work up to 10 hours per day, 5 days per week.  Will also be required to work up to 14 hours per day, and up to 7 days per week as needed during the busy construction season. This position may require traveling for extended periods of time to perform the job duties at various jobsite locations.

 

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Participates in daily THINK meetings plus weekly safety meetings.
  • Follows the Asphalt Best Practice Groundman Training Manual daily.
  • Schedules and ensures timely delivery of oil, fuel, aggregates and supplies to the plant.
  • Responsible for plant production of materials and ensures for the efficient working condition of the plant.
  • Ensures that all assigned equipment is properly maintained. Clean, in safe working order and operated properly
  • Assists with stockpiling materials and feeds hot plant from the stockpiles in an efficient and productive manner.
  • Prepares plant for operations at the beginning of the season, and performs shut down procedures at the end of the season.
  • Operates front end loader, skidsteer, end dump and other heavy equipment.
  • Performs plant maintenance and repairs, including welding tasks.
  • Performs set up and take down of traveling plants at different job site locations as required.

 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

  • High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • Must have the ability to interpret and apply verbal and / or written instructions in English. Must have good depth perception and coordination to operate machine controls.
  • Basic knowledge of plant operations, conveyors, motors, and basic mechanical and electrical skills required.
  • Welding, cutting and fabricating skill required. Computer skills required.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s license .CDL Class A preferred, but not required
  • Must pass pre-employment physical screening and controlled substance testing.

  • Demonstrates good performance, safety and attendance.
  • Demonstrates proper lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling techniques.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to work overtime and weekends / holidays.
  • Demonstrates ability to work and communicate well with Supervisors, Truck Drivers, Heavy Equipment Operators and other employees.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently, without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates the ability to confirm to and maintain OSHA, MSHA, DOT and all other company or state rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow written and / or verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrates the willingness to learn and work a variety of job tasks.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Past Hot plant Operator experience preferred
  • Plant mechanic skills preferred, along with fabrication and welding
  • Class A CDL Preferred

The job of Hot Plant Operator is a Very Heavy Duty job, according to the Selected Characteristics of Occupations Defined in the Revised Dictionary of Occupational Titles , U.S. Department of Labor and Industry. Very Heavy Duty involved exertions of more than 100 pounds occasionally, and / or more than 50 pounds frequently, and / or more than 20 pounds continuously to move objects.
