Position Overview

The Project Engineer assists Project Managers, Estimators, Superintendents and Construction Manager with the administration of Helena Sand and Gravel’s construction work.  Primarily work 8-10 hours per day, 5 days per week, however, more than 40 hours per week is often required and some weekends may be required. This position may include traveling for extended periods of time to perform job duties at various job site locations, but primarily based in Helena, Montana.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Complete pre-bid takeoffs.
  • Develop small project bids.
  • Transfer projects from bidding software to accounting software.
  • Prepare and submit permit applications.
  • Prepare project submittals.
  • Help prepare subcontracts and purchase offers.
  • Maintain project files.
  • Assist field superintendents and surveyors.
  • Work with construction crews.
  • Track and maintain project quantities.
  • Help Project Managers/Superintendents/Estimators as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as needed.



To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.



  • Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering or equivalent degree preferred.
  • Previous civil construction experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers, software and Microsoft products required.


Work Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to work independently, with little direct supervision.
  • Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively with written and/or verbal instructions.
  • Ability to conform to and maintain Oldcastle, DOT, OSHA and all other state and federal rules and regulations.

  • Willingness to learn and work on a variety of job tasks.

  • Regular, on time attendance is an essential function of this position.


Personal Protective Equipment

Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and construction areas as outlined by the Company policy. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position:  Hard hat, safety glasses, reinforced toed shoes, hand protection, hearing protection, safety vest/high visibility clothing for any work in the field.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee is required to sit, walk, stand, climb, crawl, bend, kneel, reach above shoulders, and lift and/or move from 10 to 100 pounds for periods of time.  The employee must be able to drive a company vehicle to various work sites throughout the state.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust to focus both during daytime hours and nighttime hours.
