Position Overview

Assist with paver operations in a safe, efficient and proper manner to achieve a quality finished product in the paving process. Properly follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for a safe working procedures and environment.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • The operator is responsible for depth, drainage and slope control of the paver.
  • Possess a solid understanding of all aspects of the asphalt paving industry including preparatory work and paving patterns.
  • Experience is preferred but not required in operating an asphalt screed.
  • May perform other related duties to the paving operation.



To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.



  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience operating the screed for a paving crew.
  • Must have a valid Montana State driver’s license
  • CDL license is preferred but not required.


Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Must have a “safety first” attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures is required. Properly follow all company policies and OSHA/MSHA regulations for safe working procedures and environment.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must have good depth perception and coordination to operate machine controls.
  • Demonstrates good performance, safety and attendance.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to work overtime and weekends.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical screening and controlled substance testing.


Environmental and Physical Requirements

Job requires the following motions: stretching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, throwing, walking, standing, reaching and squatting. Requires regular lifting of 25 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds Walking and standing each occupy approximately 50 percent of the work day. Overtime work is often required. May be exposed to extremes of hot or cold weather. May be exposed to vehicular traffic. Required riding to and from job. This position is subject to outdoor conditions. This position is required to work in the field and must be able to operate the screed and work on the crew as needed with or without reasonable accommodation.
