Summary

The cost accountant is responsible for applying accepted accounting principles and procedures to analyze business operations and financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare, examine and analyze monthly financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and compliance with accepted policies and procedures.
  • Apply principles of cost accounting to determine cost of business activity, such as construction, equipment, raw material purchases, material production and inventory.
  • Develop, maintain and analyze budgets, preparing monthly reports that compare budgeted costs to actual costs.
  • Analyze business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments and obligations to forecast future revenues and expenses.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (BS) in Accounting or Finance from a four-year college or university with two or more years of related experience (industry preferred), or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Language Skills

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ration, percent, land to draw and interpret bar graphs.  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages and area.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of accounting software, spreadsheet software and word processing software.
