Position Overview

The ability to diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, such as bulldozers, graders and others used in construction industries.  Also includes Mixer and Dump truck maintenance and repair on any type of diesel engines.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Operate a service truck to travel to-from equipment jobsite when performing remote repairs, fueling, lubrication and diagnostics in the field.
  • Works extended, and at time, erratic hours.
  • Adhere to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations as set forth by the US Department of Transportation.
  • Trouble shoot and maintain all types of heavy equipment, including but not limited to reclaim and milling machines, loaders, graders, dozers, pavers, rollers, dump trucks and concrete trucks.
  • Examines equipment and discusses with Project Manager nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
  • Plans work procedure and/or possible solutions such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts, or rearrangement of parts or subassemblies.
  • Raises equipment, with hydraulic jack, hoist or crane, to gain access to components attached to underside of equipment.
  • Removes units or sub assemblies such as engines, transmissions, drums, seals, etc.
  • Repairs or replaces parts such as drums, seals, buckets, hydraulic pumps, electric          motors, valves, pistons, rods, gears, etc.
  • Rebuilds components for engines, transmissions, drive assembly, hydraulic systems, electrical system, A/C, air brake, chassis, cab and body. Diagnose and repair equipment electrical systems including ignition systems, lights, and instrument panel.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
  • Drains fluids and oil, ensuring proper procedures for containment, sampling and/or disposal.
  • Devises, fabricates, and assembles new or modified mechanical components or assemblies for products such as industrial equipment and machinery, power equipment.
  • Sets up and conducts tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals for improving equipment performance or other factors, or to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience

 

  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements: Class B CDL ( tank and hazmat endorsement a plus).

Work Requirements

  • Must be 18 years in age or older.  Must pass DOT physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • MVR must meet company standards.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to Company safety requirements and procedures
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required. 
  • Attendance required according to company attendance policy to ensure crew is able to operate at normal efficiency level.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.  Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls.
  • Must own mechanic tools required for work being performed

 

Work Requirements

  • Possess a strong drive to fulfill commitments and tremendous enthusiasm.
  • Report to the assigned job site with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Must possess and maintain current driver’s license.
  • Ability to be flexible with last minute schedule changes, location changes, time of shift changes. Overtime work required. Out of town/county/or state work may be required
  • Employee must meet APAC Driver Qualification Standard.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and         maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Walking, climbing, balancing, stooping kneeling, crouching and traveling over irregular terrain.
  • Some tasks involve: prolonged periods of standing and /or exposure to noise or weather, good motor coordination, finger dexterity, and color discrimination.
  • Must be able to lift 10 lbs. continuously, 10-25 lbs. frequently, and 25-100 occasionally.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Capable of lifting heavy objects and equipment.
  • Capable of working at heights.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally regularly exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold.  The employee is exposed to vibration.
  • Frequently works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
