Job Description


The Toolmaker reports to the Maintenance Operations Manager. The person in this position must be able to plan, develop, fabricate, assemble, maintain, and repair tools and special machines. The Toolmaker builds, repairs, and maintains dies, jigs, fixtures and related tools. In addition, this person performs general die maintenance such as sharpening, repairing and/or replacing details, grinding form steels, timing dies correctly, and modifying tools to current standards.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Ability to read prints and run precision equipment, operate lathes, mills, surface grinders, and drill presses, etc.
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances, using standard measuring instruments
  • Fitting, aligning, and doweling, assemblies for ease of maintenance, is a required skill
  • Develop specifications from descriptions and make sketches of tools to be made
  • Must be versed in the machining of steels and alternate metals, along with, the methods used to alter their physical properties (i.e. Heat Treating, Cold Working, etc.)
  • Repair worn or inoperable tools and dies with high level of troubleshooting abilities
  • Makes decisions and judgments about proper course of action for tooling repairs and maintenance
  • Provides Maintenance Operations Manager with recommendations for larger purchases or major repairs
  • Maintains a safe and productive work environment
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned




  • Strong understanding and experience in die theory and troubleshooting
  • Must manage production tools and dies spare key parts inventory to optimum levels
  • At least five (5) years of experience with a preferred level of eight (8) years experience in production and troubleshooting
  • At least a high school diploma and four years of related trade instruction. The preferred level would be Journeyman Status Certificate (State Certified Journeyman Status)
  • Must have personal small measuring tools, indicators, etc.
  • Keeps all required records and maintains a clean work area
  • Able to lift up to 60 lbs. on an occasional basis
  • Willingness to work additional hours when required, including weekends
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Computer Experience required
