Position Overview

Operates Milling or Reclaim machine in a safe, efficient and proper manner.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Communicate with Project Manager/Foreperson as to the daily job specification, the anticipated production, depth of materials being removed, number of trucks, etc.
  • Daily pre-start up procedures which may include but not be limited to:
  • Be aware of other equipment working on the project and coordinate to work with these other equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret and incorporate information derived from the manual for the specific piece of equipment being operated.
  • Greases, oils, and performs minor repairs on machine.
  • Keep equipment clean, promoting positive public image, and enabling close range equipment inspection.
  • Complete Equipment and Vehicle Condition Report weekly, noting odometer readings, equipment hours, needed repairs, etc.
  • Park equipment in a place that is readily accessible to the Equipment Mover.
  • Inspect machine carefully for evidence of physical damage (cracking, bending or deformation of plates or welds). 
  • Maintain complete command of the machine and surrounding operations at all times.
  • Adhere to any and all state and federal regulations, if applicable, as set forth by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), or any other regulatory agency.

 

Milling Operator Duties

  • Safe, efficient and proper operation of milling machine to gouge out, level and distribute milled material from road, in preparation for repaving road and/or other paved surface.
  • Moves levers to control tool bars, carriers, and disks.
  • Moves levers to maneuver machine and raise, lower and tilt drum and conveyor to remove material required.
  • Feels lever and listens for stalling action of engine to estimate depth of cut.
  • Operate machine in successive passes over surface to obtain specified grade following markings on pavement surface or hand signals.
  • Be proficient in welding to replace worn teeth blocks and holders when required.

 

Reclaim Operator Duties

  • Remove, check screed and extensions 
  • Check for loose, broken or missing parts such as screed attachments and extensions, nuts and bolts, etc.
  • Ensure that tow arms, screed, and flow gates are adjusted properly to maintain appropriate head of material, angle of attack, and depth of mix in augers.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site in uniform and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual.
  • Strict adherence to Pike policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Manual.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required. 

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

 

Education/Experience

  • Two years experience running reclaimer and milling experience
  • Skid Steer and Trimmer experience preferred
  • Welding experience preferred

 

General Requirements

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate and apply commonsense and understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and dependable transportation to and from the job site.
