Position Overview


Provides the vision and strategic guidance necessary to lead the activities of all operations facilities within P.J. Keating.  Works closely with peers and the President of the company to improve performance of the aggregates line of business. Responsible for the P&L of three major aggregate quarries in excess of 3 million tons per year, as well as, production through portable crushers of 300k plus tons per year. Create, nurture, and sustain an environment of teamwork and collaboration.  Promotes and ensures safety and total compliance with P.J. Keating’s Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.  Responsible for all aspects of operational performance for aggregates and production of sized and specific products within the aggregate facilities. Develops and implements the operations strategy.  Insure a strong focus on growth.  Insures a strong focus on teamwork between operations and other lines of business.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)


  • Manages the aggregates operations to ensure the area meets budget, productivity goals, and objectives.
  • Manages and directs plants to ensure the Company is maximizing return on assets.
  • Ensures that all plants are in compliance with all Company policies and procedures to include governmental rules and regulations.
  • Works closely with Company resources to ensure that all permits and reclamation plans are current and the locations are in compliance. Takes proper steps to secure new permits to expand Company mining operations at plants.
  • Responsible for the P&L of three major aggregate quarries in excess of 3 million tons per year, as well as, production through portable crushers of 300k plus tons per year
  • Oversees, proactive and progressive employee relations activities at assigned plants to maintain a high level of employee satisfaction and assigned plants operate with no work stoppages or any type of employee disruptions.
  • Work with site managers and business agents to build and maintain a good working relationship with union. Participate in collective bargaining activities (grievance administration and contract negotiations)
  • Ensures that all assigned plants are in full compliance with all Company EHS policies and procedures. Ensures sites meet or exceed Company and EHS goals and objectives. Strive for zero incidents. 
  • Manages and directs the annual budget process for each plant developing detailed operating budgets to include capital expenditure plans and cost reduction programs.
  • Works with sales in addressing customer relations and customer service requests to ensure Operations meets or exceeds customer expectations.
  • Ensures that materials mined are processed in accordance with Company specifications and quality standards.
  • Manages and directs the capital expenditure plans for each site to ensure that all capital projects are completed according to plan and cost projections.
  • Manages and directs automation and process improvement goals and objectives for assigned plants to ensure that productivity goals, efficiency goals and objectives are met.
  • Ensures that each plant has a comprehensive system to track and monitor costs on a daily/monthly basis to determine performance, as well as, develop plans to address variances.
  • Attends government and community meetings in acquiring new or modification mining permits.
  • Participates in Company and Group Leadership Team meetings to include focus on short and long range strategic business planning.
  • Participates in reviewing potential acquisitions as members of due diligence team to review operations of new acquisitions.
  • May participate in cross-functional task teams.
  • Member of the senior leadership team of the company.
  • Ensures that the process improvements meet or exceed productivity improvement goals and objectives through human resources management.
  • Oversees comprehensive training and process improvement activities to provide supervisor and employee with tools to incorporate process improvements into day-to-day job duties.
  • Oversees the development of short and long-term plant engineering plans to ensure site locations have modern equipment to support company goals and objectives.
  • Ensures that each location has an effective preventative maintenance programs to ensure equipment and sites follow progressive preventive maintenance programs and equipment and sites are modernized and properly serviced.
  • Works on strategies and programs to reduce costs, improve productivity and efficiency through capital and people.
  • Incorporates latest technologies and method improvements to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs to support plans.
  • Works closely with technical support functions such as quality control, and mining on engineering support for their areas of responsibilities.
  • Other duties may be assigned as required.




To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.



  • BA/BS degree in Engineering or Management, or equivalent education and/or experience is required.  Advanced degree or MBA preferred.
  • 10 plus years of experience in construction materials operations management
  • Previous management experience


Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Knowledge of construction material production methods, products and technology is highly desirable;
  • Ability to trend performance of various operating units versus key business goals and take effective action when results are below these goals;
  • Proven ability to hire, develop and retain exceptional personnel;
  • Knowledge and understanding of rock mining operations, and management theory and practices; modern plant engineering principles and practices;
  • Strong understanding of aggregate plant operations with a focus on crushing and screening equipment;
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance principles and practices;
  • Ability to effectively interface with all levels of people.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to include both written, oral, and listening skills;
  • Knowledge and understanding of modern purchasing and procurement practices;
  • Knowledge and understanding of labor relations and collective bargaining;
  • Strong understanding of quality control systems and processes to eliminate defected products, knowledge and understanding of engineering technologies and practices to improve efficiencies and reduce operating costs;
  • Able to adapt programs to motivate and reward people toward higher levels of performance;
  • Able to establish, measure and hold individuals accountable for achieving performance expectations and achieving goals;
  • Requires complete knowledge of the capability and proper utilization of machinery.
  • Ability to work closely with and integrate sales, financial and operations disciplines to maximize performance;
  • Ability to interact successfully with all levels of the organization and outside constituents, to include, community officials, neighbors and governmental agency representatives;
  • Able to think comprehensively and strategically, adjust thinking to changing circumstances and consistently exercise sound business judgment;
  • Strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to constructively confront delicate issues;
  • Leadership – effectively coach and develop, delegate and control, motivate and influence, persuade, communicate vision and remove obstacles that slow or prevent the attainment of that vision.
