Summary

 

Organizes and schedules activities of the employees working within the production department to produce cost effective amounts of clinker and cement, according to quality control specifications and plant production goals. Coordinates production activities with other departments to ensure shipping, maintenance and quarry activities are aware of production schedules. On shifts where this position is the supervisor at the plant, this position is responsible for all employees working at the plant during that shift.  This position may also provide supervisory relief for marine, production, shipping supervisors and production manager.

  • Refers to supervisor when in a serious doubt as to the proper procedure for a specified action.

 

Supervision Exercised

 

  • Exercises indirect and direct supervision to production shift employees, labor and shipping.
  • Employees supervised ranges between 5-60 employees depending on the circumstances.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Prioritize, assigns and communicates tasks to direct and indirect reports.
  • Directs production, labor and shipping teams and manages plant operations to assure production goals are achieved. Strives for continuous improvement of production operations.
  • Monitors and supervises the performance of salaried and hourly employees working directly in the production, shipping and labor departments. Evaluates job performance and communicates same to employees.
  • Performs hiring, recommends or provides technical training, discipline and other related duties as needed.
  • Coordinates with control room personnel to respond as quickly as possible to problems occurring in the production process.
  • Monitors inventories to insure raw material, clinker and cement levels are sufficient to meet demand and achieve budgeted targets.
  • Conduct routine plant inspections and coordinate with Labor Department to insure plant cleanliness is achieved.
  • Monitors quality control and coordinates with lab and production personnel to ensure that adjustments are made as needed to enhance quality to meet required specifications.
  • Collaborates with Team Members from prior and following shifts regarding the status of production operations, problems and adjustments being made to meet production standards and objectives.
  • Ensures team understanding that material streams from the producing units and transfer facilities are properly positioned and operating.
  • Provide support so that safety meetings are held on a regular basis to make sure employees understand and practice proper safety procedures.
  • Assures that inspections of work areas are completed for safety hazards and ensures compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Monitor records of employee overtime, absences, vacations, etc. and accuracy of daily time sheets.
  • Monitors inventory of materials in the plant daily and that documentation is provided accordingly.
  • Inspects equipment and process systems and provide data to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical and process concerns.
  • Assists with Investigations and reporting accidents and incidents as required by internal contacts and external agencies.
  • Investigates, recommends and implements capital investments as needed.
  • Coordinates efforts with other departments such as maintenance, shipping, labor, quarry, and marine.
  • Assures accurate preparation of daily reports and maintains required records regarding production operations as requested.
  • Inspects equipment and process system breakdowns, determines repairs needed and writes work orders.  Coordinates and supervises equipment repairs and preventative maintenance performed by maintenance and/or production personnel.
  • Ensures that appropriate amount of needed supplies and tools are maintained for the teams as needed. 
  • Purchases and/or orders supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Supervises contractors working on projects as needed.
  • Coordinates supervision for plant operations during the night and weekend shifts.  This can include quarry, production, maintenance, electrical and shipping.
  • Assures that procedures are adequate to receive, inspects and unloads shipments of fuel, clinker, cement, and raw materials received via truck, rail car and barge.
  • Develops and instills in production supervisors a working understanding of all company and plant policies affecting plant operations.
  • Inspects kiln, preheater and cooler systems refractory, track/document refractory lining thickness, maintains accurate refractory inventories, calculate/order required refractories, maintain/update kiln brick chart and train personnel in refractory installations. Coordinate refractory projects with vendors.
  • Represents Ash Grove Cement Company in a professional manner at all times.
  • Performs other job-related duties as needed. 

 

ISO 14001 Training Plan

 

  • The Production Superintendent must become familiar with and participate in initial and annual training for ISO 14001. 

 

Required Minimum Qualifications

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

 

  • Extensive knowledge of kiln, mill operations, equipment, mobile equipment, machinery functions and process control of the production process. 
  • Knowledge of other plant departments such as shipping, maintenance, quarry and engineering.
  • Ability to understand and comply with company and plant policies covering plant employees (where applicable).
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic math functions. 
  • Skills needed include supervisory, communication, organization, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to effectively monitor production operations, quickly detect and respond to processing problems. 
  • Understanding and ability to comply with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Work requires the ability to inspect all processing operations including worker and equipment. 
  • Inspections involve climbing stairs and ladders, walking over rough and slippery surfaces, standing for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, and being exposed to extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

 

Education

 

  • High school graduate plus a four-year degree required with emphasis in Engineering.

 

Experience

 

  • Three or more years of supervisory experience in the production area of a cement or related industrial plant facility preferred.
