Position Overview


The Director, Health and Safety provides internal safety consulting and leadership to the local leadership teams in the cement businesses to further enhance our safety culture to drive continuous improvement in all aspects of safety performance.  The role provides technical and compliance expertise to the business including analysis of safety related data to the leadership teams.  The Director will partner with local business leadership to develop strategies for improved safety performance and sharing of best practices.  The Director will also support the day-to-day department operations of safety for each plant, and ensure proper reporting practices of all workers’ compensation, general liability, and auto claims within the company.


Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Partner with business unit leadership to drive proper safe behavior and strong safety culture.  Be the safety strategy leader to motivate the organization to become the safest company at Suwannee American Cement Company (SACC) through employee empowerment and engagement practices.
  • In partnership with business leaders, develop safety policies and procedures that support the company’s goals, the operation’s needs, and achievement of safety results.  Support the company’s safety standards and discipline guidelines.  Lead and ensure compliance with all SACC incident reporting requirements.
  • Enhance and maintain tools to track and analyze key performance indicators for all levels of the organization.  Utilize analysis to identify trends and recommend actions to mitigate incidents.  Benchmark internally and externally to provide context for performance to these KPI’s.  Develop and implement plans with company leadership to obtain goals for safety that provide continuous improvement in key safety related indicators.
  • Investigate all incidents for root-cause development to ensure unsafe conditions/behavior are not repeated.
  • Implement processes and deliver training/education for compliance, motivate behavior change and create a proactive approach to safety.  Investigate (or lead the investigation) of all incidents for root-cause development to ensure unsafe conditions/behavior are not repeated.
  • Ensure the company meets and exceeds regulations established by government and regulatory agencies – OSHA, MSHA, DOT, etc. to include employee training, facilities, and recordkeeping.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policy and external regulation and administer programs to include DOT compliance services, Random Drug Testing, medical exams, and PPE.
  • Partner with insurance company loss control/safety consulting services to support and improve the  Region’s safety processes. 
  • Involved in SACC best practice teams, industry and safety specific associations/committees and continuous improvement teams.




  • BS degree in a related field
  • 7+ years of relevant cement or related mining experience with increasing responsibility (relevant experience includes mining, industrial safety, manufacturing, maintenance, transportation, etc.)
  • CSP or CMSP is preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of OSHA, DOT and MSHA regulations.  OSHA and/or MSHA instructor certification is a plus
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft applications: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory and industry standards and best practices

  • Demonstrated strong consultative and influencing skills with the ability to resolve conflicts and diffuse difficult situations
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills with proven experience in training delivery
  • Approachable and engaging demeanor with the flexibility and ability to operate within a changing environment
  • Knowledgeable in incident investigation, root cause determination and in acting as liaison with insurance adjusters and attorneys in claims handling and defense.
  • Skilled in Worker’s Compensation and management of the claims process as well as appropriate interactions with management and workers following an injury.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders including senior level management and business unit leadership.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with people across all levels of the organization.
  • Develop strong networking and relationships with internal operations leaders and safety professionals.
  • Work effectively with regulators, vendors, and others to provide the best outcome for the company and employees.
  • Knowledge of workers’ compensation regulations and best practices.
  • Analytical ability and process improvement knowledge.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents and regulations.
  • Ability to develop and foster relationships and trust at all levels of the organization.


Work Requirements


  • Must be 18 years in age or older.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as per company policy.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must maintain current driver’s license that meets state requirements
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA.
